meet AMS' senior management team
Prior to founding Advanced Mobile Solutions, in 1989 Bret co-founded Advanced Telecom Services, Inc. (ATS)--a leading interactive voice response company specializing in 800 and 900 services. ATS has provided audiotext applications for hundreds of media companies within the newspaper, radio and TV industries. Over the last 18 years, ATS has grown its business entirely through internal cash flow, reaching its peak sales year of $61 million in 2001. Bret held many positions within ATS. From 1989 to 1996 he served as Chief Financial Officer; from 1997 to 1999 Bret was Managing Director of ATS’ UK office based in London. From 2000 to 2003 he served as Chief Operating Officer and from 2004 to 2006, he served as President of ATS. Bret was responsible for starting the ringtone business within ATS in 2001 through the creation of two B2C websites: www.ringingphone.com and www.monstertones.com. Bret oversaw the licensing of content, development of an e-commerce site, the mobile technology associated with delivering binary content to disparate handsets through various carrier operating systems, and the day-to-day administration and human-resources necessary to operate the business division. The ringtone business model was based primarily on subscriptions. Ringingphone had 28,000 subscribers to its service paying $5.00 per month. Ringingphone.com reached a top 5,000 Alexa ranking and consistently averaged over 1 million unique visitors a month. Bret also engineered the sale of ATS’ ringtone business to Zim Technologies in April, 2006. Bret Dunlap holds a BS in economics from James Madison University in 1981 and an MBA with a concentration in finance & investments from George Washington University in 1983.
A veteran of the newspaper publishing and advertising industry, David first worked with newspapers as an Army Photojournalist in 1984. In 1989, he joined the Scripps Newspapers affiliate, United Media/United Features Syndicate, where he marketed interactive audiotext programs to editors, and advertising executives. David joined Bret and the Advanced Telecom Services’ (ATS) management team as Sr. Sales Executive in January 1993. David developed and successfully marketed the company’s IVR and web personals solution to newspapers throughout North America. By 1998, ATS had become the second largest provider of web and telephony personals to the daily newspaper industry (working with 34 of the USA’s top 100 circulation newspapers at the business’ peak in 2001). Voice personals represented ATS’ dominant revenue stream for many of the ten years David worked full time with ATS. In December 2003, David joined Builder Homesite, Inc. (BHI) as Director of Business Development (BHI is an Austin, Texas based technology company owned by a consortium of 35 of the largest new homebuilders in the US). David marketed a private label version of BHI’s www.newhomesource.com, new home search technology to newspapers. Partners would implement BHI’s platform as a locally branded new homes search engine on its websites and regional web portals. Over the next two years, David more than doubled the client base and increased BHI’s newspaper channel revenue by nearly 300%. He also consulted extensively and proactively with new and existing newspaper partners to improve sales methodology, thus allowing them to dramatically increase adoption of this solution by local builders, and resulting in significant revenue increases for partners. He also created and implemented numerous data and technology enhancements to the core BHI offering to generate more revenue and overall success for newspapers when implementing BHI’s products and data services. David returned in November of 2005 to co-found AMS. David has extensive knowledge of newspaper advertising operations and online classified verticals with active relationships with more than 600 industry decision makers (at the largest newspapers and newspaper groups in the US), A 1983 graduate of Houghton (NY) College, David earned a double major (BA) in writing and speech communications. During his four years in the US Army, he was highly decorated, earning numerous commendations, soldiering and leadership awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Journalist of the Year for the Training and Doctrine Command, and runner up for Journalist of the Year for the entire army in 1988, before leaving the service in January 1989.
In addition to management roles in large companies such as Siemens Medical and Automatic Data Processing, Eric has been involved in the startup of two successful technology consulting companies and was a key principal in Medical Imaging Technology Associates, which was sold to a publicly-held company in 1997. Eric was Chief Operating Officer for Digimax Multimedia and Medical Imaging Technology Associates. Through his three years of managing ATS’ ringtone sites, Eric has a keen understanding of the operational aspects of a mobile content company as well as the technical and administrative complications in the young industry.
